The workshop involves drilling patterns of holes into bamboo. Pre-made paper patterns are provided, making it so even small children and their parents can give it a try. You're also welcome to not use a pattern and make your own original design. You can take your finished lamp home as a souvenir! Put a small light inside the lamp to create gentle lighting with a taste of Japan.
Bamboo lamps are widely used throughout Aso, such as the bamboo lantern events held in winter in Nishihara and Kurokawa Onsen. It's the perfect activity for creating a lasting memento of your time in Aso.
You'll use a drill to open holes of various sizes in a 30 cm length of bamboo. Many visitors find drilling hole after hole to be very calming.
Guests at Chikurakutei or Minawa age 10 and up (6 and up if accompanied by a parent) are welcome. Staff is on hand to safely guide your experience.
